Artist Statement..

I'm an artist who grew up in L.A. and is currently working in Chicago. At this time sculpture is my primary focus,

however my two dimensional work is never far detached. Recent works use a combination of assemblage and hand painted elements to narrate current trends in society and the individual’s role within it, more specifically focusing on identity. The narrative template plays a significant role in my work, which explores the relationships between parts to whole and the individual versus the masses. In this work in progress I’ve used the horse as a visual metaphor for conquest and assimilation.

Michaël Verheyden (1978) is a Belgium based designer. Passionate about rock music, but probably also inspired by silence, he creates fashion accessories and home objects.
Apart from his quest for good quality fabrics, Michaël Verheyden puts a lot of time into finding new ways to construct things. He always tries to combine innovation, craftsmanship and quality into clean-cut, purified designs.

Kicking off the fall season, Pavilion has filled the gallery with a wide variety of specially selected pieces ranging from the elegant and chic 40"s, works by Drouet, Le Fevre, Ramsay and Maison Jansen, to the minimalist 70's with pieces by Paulin, Monnet, Pergay, Salocchi, and beyond.

This is a must be seen collection, not readily found here in the U.S. This latest group from Europe consists of coffee and side tables, lounge chairs, lamps, mirrors and decorative accessories.

A wide range of materials have been chosen, gilded iron, lacquered wood, stainless steel, leather and stone makes for one of the best collections yet.

The new group show at Pavilion is centered around the use of light.

"Pavilion has a long standing passion for lighting", said co-owner Deborah Colman, "It was a natural progression to showcase new lighting and vintage lighting together".

This fascinating collection of artist/designers' work includes: Llot Llov, Berlin, Christien Meindertsma, Holland, Katrin Schnabel, professor at the School of the Art institute of Chicago, Tanya Aguiñiga, Los Angeles and vintage lighting from Victor Vasarely, and Mariyo Yagi plus photograms by Doug Fogelson and encaustic paintings by Lonny H White.

Included are works that inhabit both the art and functional worlds. The pieces by Llot Llot, and Christien Meindertsma are from an art workshop perspective, sculptural, lines in space, conceived as a way to communicate memory and ideas from one to another using knit wool and flax rope. They are also beautiful, functioning, lighting designed with an innovative use of traditional materials.

Photographer Doug Fogelson will use the medium of photogram/luminogram, a direct process of creating imagery with light, in a collaborative way with the artists work that will reflect upon the installation.

ATELIER POLYHEDRE SERVES UP CERAMICS WITH STYLE

AT 100% DESIGN AND NOW AT PAVILION

Atelier Polyhedre, a French ceramics studio, develops tableware and decorative

items both as limited editions and as one-offs. The company will present a set of

tableware inspired by the famous French Chantilly whipped cream at the 100%

Design show, which will be held in London at the end of September 2009.

The new tableware range is designed to capture the distinctive and playful appearance of Chantilly cream in the medium of glazed earthenware. These shapes and motifs are used to create a collection of ceramics mirroring the smooth, whipped cream, vivaciously unregulated, and the sense of a liquid that is ebbing and flowing – all these states are reflected in the different components of the table service.

Quirkiness and humour are the essential ingredients of this collection – a whipped plate, a soup tureen that appears to be overflowing, a plate overturned like a collapsed cream cake, and a cup decorated with a net of gold that seems to melt into its saucer. The brilliant whites and intense blacks of the enamelling add a refined note to tables and kitchens, whether in a regular residentiaL property, in a stately home or in a palace hotel.

THE STORY BEHIND ATELIER POLYHEDRE

Situated on the banks of the river Loire, at the heart of the city of Nantes, Atelier Polyhedre benefits from its location within a rich cultural environment. The Estuaire Biennial Arts Festival is held in the region, which is also home to a vast network of galleries and artists. The historical importance of traditional craftsmanship in the region has also informed the company’s development.

Baptiste Ymonet founded the company in 2004 in order to design a special collection of earthenware objects. Baptiste, who was born in 1973, studied at the School of Fine Arts (the Ecole des Beaux Arts) in Tours (in the Loire Valley), where he fi rst discovered the appeal of working with ceramics. Eggs, balls and spheres are the recurrent sources of inspiration for his unique pieces of work. He likes to recall Baudelaire’s words to describe his designs: “Making gold out of mud.”

In 2007, Atelier Polyhedre’s work was awarded the Prix des Jeunes Créateurs (award for young designers) by the Ateliers d’Art de France (an organisation promoting the French crafts industry). It was on this occasion that the company took part in the Maison & Objet trade show in Paris for the fi rst time. Born in 1978, Vincent Jousseaume studied at the School of Fine Arts in Nantes, during which time he worked on designs in plastic based around the theme of mealtimes. It is hardly surprising, therefore, that he chose to specialise in ceramics and crockery, bringing a touch of disorder to all kinds of tables.

Vincent joined Polyhedre in 2007 to develop a range that was specifi cally dedicated to tableware.

In 2008, the duo developed the Cling brand of crockery together.

Rowan Mersh is a textile based sculptor who explores form and fuses design with technique, emphasizing experimentation as the focus of his practice. Mersh is a celebrated graduate of the Royal College of Art, the first to win the Mercury Art Prize, profiled in design magazines and featured on the cover of an acclaimed author’s book Fashioning Fabrics, which examined his work alongside fashion icons Issey Miyake, Hussein Chalayan to mention but a few. Mersh’s work is process oriented, the work reveals itself within his practice, as it takes form and shape depending on the emphasis and materials. Mersh ‘s work has already been acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum for the permanent collection and has been exhibited internationally in galleries and independent spaces.

Mersh has developed a unique aesthetic, which is at once obvious upon encounter of his various larger and smaller sculptural forms whether it be in fashion, photography, textile, sculpture or any other experimental agenda in which he embark.

The V&A recently acquired CD Vinyl Sculpture Part 2 by Rowan Mersh who is one of the most prolific and talented young artists to emerge from the RCA.Mersh is fascinated by manipulation of fabrics especially knitted stretched jersey, trapping objects as diverse as cds, records and even cocktail sticks within the fabric to create amazing sculptural forms.......His constant experimentation results in some of the most innovative and exciting textiles being produced today.

For the past 12 years, Pavilion’s vision has been the exploration and discovery of great European vintage design and bringing the work of well know International designers and artists such as Boyer, Mangiarotti, Jouve, Vautrin, Ramsay, and Jansen to Chicago.

Pavilion announces the expansion of this vision to include new design objects and accessories by innovative artists and designers from Europe and the United States.

During the last 6 months while traveling to France to buy great vintage furnishings, we have discovered several artists that we are presenting exclusively in Chicago and the United States for the first time starting November 27, 2009.

Pavilion has always presented products of exclusivity and character. With these same critical guidelines, we have chosen select pieces by emerging and established designers and artists. The unifying factor is a strong aesthetic vision, innovative use of materials, and high quality of craftsmanship, as well as, for original concepts, whimsy, and pristine execution. Some of the collections will be limited edition, while others will be an ongoing addition to Pavilion 20^th century.

One of the designers we are most excited about is aldo bakker, son of gils bakker a co founder of droog design. his collection of amazing sculptural and exquisite ceramics will be the first collection to arrive.

skin series bud vases by the mighty bear cats

the skin series bud vases are made of a heat sensitive plastic that when in contact with temperatures above 250 degrees will shrink in size. at first glance the vases appear to be made of a thin fragile porcelain, however once the vase is picked up it is found to be soft and flexible. because each vase is hand made and produced individually no two are exactly alike, however they all retain similar characteristics allowing the size and style of any vase to fit in with the others. we just received another edition of them at pavilion.

i was in paris a few weeks ago on a small buying trip, and as always my eyes are open to something new in paris. after visiting the black store by comme des garcons i was just walking in the marais and happened upon an artist about to open at a new design galerie i had not previously known, but of course it had just opened a few months ago. isabelle mesnil and her next level galerie. i enjoyed some lovely swiss bubbly wine and talked with the artist nicolas le moigne and isabelle about the vision of the galerie and his work. visit the site for more information and perhaps visit it the next time you are in paris.

roger tallon exhibited his work M400 series in Paris in 1965 at galerie lacloche along with other artsits, philippe hilquily, pol bury, miguel berrocal, marie-claude de fouquieres, arman, rancillac, and philolaos. he is also widely known as the industrial designer whom designed the TGV and ancillary signage for the metro system of paris. of course one must not forget his famous watches. tallon's M400 series was also used in the incredible 1968c french film directed by Jacques Deray "La Piscine" with alain delon and romy schneider and a very young jane berkin. an incredible film with fabulous french and italian furniture and art.

It is a beautiful sculpture as is his fashion, stores in NYC, London, Paris.

Rick Owens, fashion designer came to Paris in 2003 to create for Revillon. After opening his own creative house he began a collection of furniture to suit his aesthetic for his own home. Owens has said that he " tries to make clothes like Lou Reed makes music, minimal chord changes and direct" Raw and refined, like art and architecture.

Influenced by Le Corbusier and Brancusi.

Michel Boyer x stools. Designed in 1968. To be used as stools or inverted and used as tables with glass plateau. Michel Boyer is an important French designer of the period, he designed important pieces for the Banque de Rothschild on rue Lafitte in Paris. He designed for Lanvin, Balmain and Dior as well. In 1975 he designed the French embassy in Brazil and in 1985 the French embassy in Washington. Many of his pieces are included in the Mobilier Naitonal of France.

A long tube of knit merino wool ending in an eco bulb.

Can be hung and manipulated by the user or artfully positioned on a table. The matt light was recently exhibited at the salone di mobile in milan, 2009, zona tortona " Made in Berlin".
